Image by aloshbennett via Flickr What? A bit unusual headline? Perhaps… But this one was actually brought based on experience while supporting my own product, talking to many friends who pride themselves in providing great support for their informational product and just observations in general. I believe that #1 reason for failure to achieve for many people is… Not Lack Of Action But Excess Of “Wrong” Action! Followed closely by lack of guidance that fits that specific person learning needs and abilities. This post is not designed in any way to “bash” anyone but rather attempt to point out obvious and perhaps help at least one person change the way they view what is available and succeed in process! Destructive Path #1 Here is one of the most common scenarios we see in supporting our product and one that I think sets the path for eventual failure: Person buys an informational product (one of the many) Takes a look at the beginning, perhaps even glance over the main points of the product and decides that he knows most of that and no need to follow what is “proven to work” Person runs into an issue Person IMMEDIATELY emails support with demand for support, most often NEVER even attempting to take a look at the training provided Cycle repeated for next product and then next – until that person finally gives up! This is the path of self destructive behavior that does damage on several levels: Person “KNOWS” that product “doesn’t work as advertised” That person now feels that he or she was once again cheated of the money paid Person wastes large amounts of time and effort to write emails, post on forums, submit support requests etc, instead of actually referencing the training provided. Not only the person above sets himself or herself for the failure through negative state of mind, he or she also wastes time, energy and resources of the support team for the product or as is the case with our product – time and resource of the product owners. Time we could spend a LOT more productively! And its not that we don’t want to support someone but consider this – when we have hundreds of active customers, many of whom with legitimate issues that require attention and help – we have to spend 5-10 minutes per email answering questions that already have the answers in tutorials we provide. From perspective of that person – not a big deal but for us it quickly adds up ! We LOVE helping our customers, in fact we consider this one of our core benefits, as we don’t outsource our relationship with customers but person has to have desire to help himself or herself! I know it is a LOT simpler and faster to just sit down and write an email demanding support, than actually spend time following the guides provided that contain all the answers in most cases. After all – “your time is important and you cannot be bothered with actually going through the training!” Right? Destructive Path #2 Lack of the training that is designed specifically to correspond to abilities and learning patterns of the each individual customer. No matter how great an Informational Product might be – it will be Complete Failure for many people! Not because it was bad or failed to provide the correct information but simply because it was out of sync with those people’s individuality! I’m not big on psychology or character analysis but I do know that for me personally some products simply fail to strike that spark that leads to complete understanding and then implementation that followed by PROFITABLE action! Don’t ask me why, as I have no idea! Perhaps some of you, with more understanding of all the psychological factors that come into play when learning, can explain the reason but for me its enough to know that I simply can’t sync up with the beat provided by the Info Product creator! That’s It! That is my personal answer and I’ll stick to it! From that point on there are only couple options I’m aware of… Search for a Different Product developer that provides study guide on same topic and hope I can sync up with his information flow better or Look into purchasing more direct training from that person, if available – it could be personal mentoring, consulting – whatever the options might be but if I feel I MUST learn from him or her – I have to be prepared to pay! This understanding comes from simple fact of separation of the Product Support, Consulting and Mentoring! These things are not the same unless specifically purchased and generally a LOT more expensive! And yet, I’m amazed when sometimes I reply to a person with a simple statement that I have to separate the product support from my consulting and state my VERY MODEST FEE of $250/hr for consulting – people get offended. I believe my fee to be very modest because I know I will deliver on it and if someone is asking me directly for consulting questions – they obviously believe I posses the knowledge to answer those questions and provide solutions. I also know a few people who charge a LOT more for the training and personal interaction but sometimes this is what it takes to make people start taking the correct action: Vested interest! Especially when it comes in very real and measurable monetary values! Truth is – anything can be discovered for free and answers found online but having someone else do it for you and then simply deliver it in format you personally will be able to understand and then forced to act on is one of the thing that people pay for in mentoring! Yes, part of the consulting fee is that understanding that you will HAVE TO act on advice that you have paid for! Sometimes we all need a swift kick in the a$$, myself included! Income Fitness by Barbara Ling is one eBook I have read lately that answers one of the biggest questions I get from multiple people: How does one start with building online business if there are not readily available cash or knowledge? While it has enough information to keep even a person experienced in many aspects of Internet Marketing interested in finishing reading it – it truly shines if you are totally new to the entire scene and quite frankly lost in all the talk, hype and promises! In fact I think it is directly answers a question submitted by one of my readers: Sounds like you? Read on than… My personal favorite quote from question above is: Many “lack of action” people are confused, don’t know what to ask and feel ashamed, so quit. That one single line submitted by Lee made me realize that perhaps I’m to blame as well for ignoring this very simple fact – Need For A Complete Guidance! Sometimes we fail to realize that what is taken for granted by us is not necessary something that even makes sense to other person and I want to thank Lee for helping me realize it! And now that I’m done beating myself up I want to answer a question that you just might have by now… How Does Income Fitness Can Help You? While I had a review copy of the eBook Barbara have shared with me, before it was fully completed – it gave me chance to see just how appealing it is in its simplicity! And no, it is not simplicity of the information but rather delivery, as Barbara is a veteran marketer and webmaster and truly shines in this eBook by delivering information in concise, actionable and simple to follow format. Organization of the ebook is one of the aspects I like as I think it will allow anyone to follow the steps outlined in it with ease. No matter what your current experience level is – information is easy to access Minimal Technical Knowledge approach within ebook ensure that you don’t need a technical background to implement strategies she shares. I think this one is my personal downfall in many cases as I like technical solution when they are available without taking into account people who might not be able to implement them. Barbara beautifully navigates through this obstacle! Exact Steps outlined to you . No more guessing on what your next action should be, just open the ebook where you left off and follow through. As long as you are honest with yourself and actually follow the steps – you have no more excuse for failure Resources Filled ebook will also points you in right direction for getting support, assistance or save the time and money by purchasing only what is absolutely needed. Ever been in position where you buy info product only to learn that you need to buy a WHOLE lot more just to be able to follow it? Then you got to give this ebook a look. There is a lot more to the eBook and the product comes with member forums, in which I also participate although not too often and it contains the information you will need and support you can understand. I’m sharing this eBook through my affiliate link but I don’t take this promotion lightly. I think this eBook will provide you with answers you are seeking for as long as you are willing to learn and willing to act! So no more excuse to the “lack of action” as a budget priced ebook by Barbara has the answers, if you are willing to ask questions. Do You Have 4 Minutes? With so many conversations these days targeting importance of doing social marketing to promote your blog on sites like Twitter , Facebook , FriendFeed I feel I have to talk about… Importance Of Planning For Social Networks Failure Image by emiemar via Flickr In fact I think I should say INEVITABLE failure! And no, it doesn’t necessary mean that the site will go down but rather a more simple variation of failure – it will fail to deliver the results you are used to seeing right now and if you don’t variate your promotional efforts – it will drug down your blog with it! Social Marketing Works… It will deliver great results if done properly and responcible probably for about 40% if not more of the entire traffic I get to my own blog. And I’m not even overly active on the social web. Social Marketing is one of your best friends and should not be ignored! But it should also not be a single source of the traffic! And here is why: Social Marketing requires constant active participation in order to deliver the results worth talking about. Yes, it is great for delivering instant gratification and send waves of the traffic even to a brand new blog, get it indexed faster and boost its authority – but in order to do so, it requires that you have active profile on social networks . And by active I mean interactive profile, where you hold 2 way conversation, engage people and not just push your own message and agenda. Can be very time consuming! Social Web is constantly changes and you have to constantly adopt in order to get best results from social marketing. Everybody wants to be the Next Facebook or Next Tweeter and people constantly look for a new interaction. You have to follow the lead and establish commanding presence at each new site, in order to benefit, even if it is destined to fail a year from now. Social Web is unpredictable . I always compare traffic I get from my social marketing to throwing a stone into a water – I know it will generate the wave if properly done but can’t predict with 100% certainty that those waves will actually reach my blog as I expect or turn into a destructive tsunami forcing you to defend your reputation. Social Marketing is a skill only a few truly posses and many pretend to – I’m one of those who openly admit my naivete in that area, although I manage to hold my own, although don’t ask me to explain how! I can probably provide even more examples but I hope you get the point! Don’t Rely On Any Single Source for Your Blog Traffic Diversify Your Traffic Strategies As I have already mentioned – social web works and you must take advantage of what it has to offer! But you should also never ignore the basics that never stopped working: Search Engine Optimization Blog to Blog Marketing (commenting, guest posting) Forum Marketing Article Marketing Video Marketing Add at least those listed above and you simply can fail when the social web fails. And if you need a great service to automate those efforts – I can recommend one provided by Willie Crawford – Push Button Traffic Do You Have 4 Minutes? Today I’m continuing with answers to the questions presented to me by my customers and readers. And question we will work with today is equally important to the blogs of every size because it deals with most important aspect that determines blog success – Targeted Traffic ! In the image above you can actually see the less common variant of problem from a blogger who already gets decent amount of visitors and simply need to expand and continue with the growth. Overcoming traffic plateau is EXTREMELY important as each and everyone of us will have to deal with it, at one point or another… How To Overcome Traffic Plateau And Get More Targeted Traffic? First I want to say – Congratulations! If you are facing same “problem” as a customer who submitted question above – you have managed to achieve already more then many blogs ever will. 1800 unique visitors per day is nothing to sneeze on and quite an accomplishment! In fact in some niches it might be close to maximum of what you will see, unless you start taking more direction actions… Step 1 – Evaluate Where Most Of Your Current Traffic Coming From This will be the most important step as we need to know exactly What Works for you right now! And in order to get this done – we need some form of Stats Tracking implemented that provides us with fairly detailed information. I personally prefer and teach my Expert WordPress customers how to integrate Google Analytics, as it is free, easy to add to your blog (just insert their javascript before the closing tag in footer.php) and provides decent level of stats. If you haven’t been using Google Stats before – you need about a month worth of stats to get more or less accurate picture on where most of your visitors are coming from. Once you identify your traffic sources – move to step 2 Step 2 – Isolate 3 Traffic Sources And Identify What Promotion Associated With It Time is precious and for us to increase amount of visitors coming to your blog we need to identify which of your promotional efforts or perhaps SEO strategies work right now and concentrate more effort on it. Implement Rinse And Repeat Strategy! If something is already working for your blog it only makes sense to do more of the same to get even more traffic. Couple examples could be: Search Engines show up as major traffic source but when you look at what content brings most of the traffic you find that you have many posts deliver a bit of traffic each but combined create a large Volume! Conclusion – Your SEO Efforts work and each post properly optimized for search engines delivers traffic even though only just a bit each post individually. Action Plan – Do a long tale keyword research, write more posts optimized for ranking for long tale ranking. eZineArticles.com shows as one of the biggest Direct Referrals. Conclusion – your article marketing works as designed and article directory delivers you not only the traffic you need but also new loyal readers and blog subscribers. Action Plan – Continue your article marketing efforts and simply increase number of articles you submit. If you simply double the number of submitted articles you should effectively double the number of new visitors from that source. And same principal can be applied to ANY traffic source. All you have to do is Identify The Source, Associate Promotional Effort Responsible for it, Rinse and Repeat but increase intensity! In my personal experience 80/20 rule applies perfectly to the traffic driving strategies – 20% of your efforts will deliver 80% of your traffic and in this portion I simply ask that you identify what 20% of your Traffic Driving Effort produce results, cut out the other 80% and then… Double Your “Proven To Work” Efforts – Double Your Traffic! Now you still left about 60% of promotional efforts left unused after you cut out what is not working and doubling what does. So lets put this effort into… Step 3 – Finding New Sources While strategy above should help you overcome the traffic plateau and effectively get a lot more of visitors, it is based on idea of simply taking advantage of what already works and ignoring the fact that these sources might have their own limits. Reality is – if you don’t branch out and continue to search for new sources of traffic – you will eventually hit the plateau again. Unique Visitors number might be a lot higher but problem will still be same – luck of growth. You simply must continue to grow, don’t settle on any single strategy and when you find one that works – add it to your 20% of the “working efforts” and continue to search for new ones. This will obviously be different for each blogger as it will be determined but what you currently do that works. Here are some of the more common: SEO Article Marketing Social Marketing Forum Marketing Video Marketing Blog Marketing Link building Your own strategy here… You get the point! And here is what I have found other bloggers say about Traffic Plateau and How to Overcome It : Darren Rowse in 6 Reasons Your Blog Traffic Might Be Declining [And What to Do About It] stated: “ While we all want to see our traffic rise the reality is that every blog has days, weeks and even months where traffic levels out or even decreases. This can be quite distressing for bloggers who have big hopes and dreams for their blogs .” Tibi Puiu in Get Your Blog Moving: Break The Plateau! writes – “ And just like life a blog will pass through several stages of existence from birth, to its moment of climax, to its inevitable death. During its lifetime, if it’s long enough of course, a blog will fluctuate numerous times on up-down scales and ever so often you’ll find that for a limited time it doesn’t go up, nor does it go down, but just stagnates. This is called a plateau .” Daniel Scocco in 4 Steps to Increase Your Blog Traffic shares – “ Just make sure to execute the 4 steps as planned and to spend the two hours and a half every day (obviously if you have more time available you can expand the time spent on each of the four steps proportionally)” Also Possibly Related articles by Zemanta Article Marketing For Improving Your Website Rankings (ronmedlin.com) White Hat SEO tips for Bloggers (seodoz.com) Track Your Seo Performance (franklinbishop.net) Do You Have 4 Minutes? Search Engine Optimization is responcible for nearly half of my effective traffic to this blog and a lot more in a case on Niche blogs, so its importance can never be overlooked. When I first started working on the web I have jumped from place to place until I run into an eBook “ SEO Made Easy ” by a guy named Brad Callen. This was a first COMPLETE information I have got on the topic and what got me started doing things right in terms of SEO. Needless to say that once I learned something good from the guy I had to check out what else he has to offer. This is where trust lead into action and I have discovered that Brad was the author behind the great little tool called Keyword Elite that was the best selling keyword research product for a last few years . You want to know why? Quality! Today Brad is getting ready to release Version 2 of the Keyword Elite and I have been beta testing it for last few days – outside of Spectacular I don’t know how to describe it. I only wish my beta version included some tutorials And while I will provide a full review of the tool later on – right now you can download the brand new report that Brad just released, called “The Keyword Minute” as it contains 3 VERY specific strategies you can start using right now to earn MORE money from the internet based on PROPER keyword research. Oh, an one more thing – report is obviously FREE ! And no, it is not the case when free is too expensive to spend time on it! Brad is one of the best when it comes to Keyword Research and his track record is beyond any doubt to me, you can Google his name if you want to. Report is a knowledge dump of some very specific strategies, not a theoretical idea but something you can use, especially as blogger and I strongly believe that proper keyword research is What Makes Blog Post SEO so successful . His first strategy although dedicated to “BUM Marketing” is easily applicable to blog post writing! But enough convincing – just grab the free report – 31 page of knowledge I enjoyed consuming and hope you will too! Let me Know What You Think About It Please! Links building software will always be in demand for as long as number of incoming links will continue to determine the ranking of your site and individual pages. While your blog permits you to build incoming links a more natural way – who wouldn’t like a little bit of automation? Huh? Today I want to share a link building plugin I have learned about by reading Jack Humphrey’s post on WordPress Plugins for SEO and Link Building . I was wondering for a quite a bit what he was using to present Related Websites on his blog posts and now I got to experiment with that plugin myself. While the jury is still out on its usefulness – it seem to have a good promise… Related Websites Plugin is free to download and install but before you get your API key that will make your blog full participant within the service – your blog have to be manually approved. I can tell you right away that Kevin Gillett, developer who also maintains the service is pretty strict and if you blog doesn’t publish unique content – you can just ignore this post all together. Niche blogs filled with PLR content will not pass the manual validation – so please don’t try to submit it! This very fact was what made me to continue using plugin even after I’m seeing some strange results. Getting incoming links from quality blogs is very important and manual approval process seem to ensure it, or so I continue to hope. What Does Related Websites Plugin Do? Main promise behind the plugin is a targeted traffic to your blog and it accomplishes it via several means: Related Websites dynamic link exchange. You can either insert a code where you want the related websites to be shown on your blog post or it will do it on its own. It really is up to you. You can’t control which sites will appear but you do have control over number of sites and if you want to show excerpt or not as well as few styling options. Although name states “Related Websites” in my experience through observation on my own blog – relevance is not very high. And only the fact that blogs are decent quality makes me feel more comfortable about it. Related Posts option. As a bonus you can display your own related posts on your posts and in your feed. Quite nice option if you don’t already use some form of Related Posts plugin, as it allows you to create highly relevant internal links structure. I haven’t tested this option as I use Simple Tags plugin to accomplish same but based on what I see on Jack’s blog – it works very well. Boost your authority through the above. Yep – number of incoming links from quality blogs “theoretically” should help you become more authoritative. I don’t know how well this plugin will do for this option as I have been using for a short time and have no results to show. Get you traffic. This one does work although I think it will greatly depend on quality of your headline writing. My own results are sub-par to say the least. I have started using plugin about 2 weeks ago and while I have seen a quick and large boost of number of incoming links – it just dropped all of a sudden. I plan to give it a bit more of time to see if it improves but as you see in image below – I currently link out to more blogs then I get back. I do have to say that there is a Paid version of the service that supposedly creates a more favorable spread of links and traffic but I haven’t tested it so I can’t speak on the fact. While I will continue to test the plugin – y ou might want to check it out for yourself, while free option is still available. This weekend I have finished my reading of Darren Rowse eBook “ 31 Days To Build a Better Blog “. All 94 pages of it! To say that it contains great information would be unfair understatement! eBook is a great resource for any blogger, no matter which platform you are using as it deals with general concepts that will apply to any platform and action steps that will work for ANY blog. So the question is then – why did I title this post: When “Good Practice” is Bad Investment? Right? Excellent point! So there I was, seating… reading… agreeing… Right up until I got to Day 27 ( yes, entire ebook is a compilation of Blog Posts by Darren that was used in project with same name ) – Hunt for Dead Links [Day 27: 31DBBB] . Entire lesson in that day is based on a VERY GOOD and solid “best practice” guideline for webmasters – be sure that you site doesn’t contain any dead links. And by dead links it simply means – any link that goes to a page that either no longer exist or changed. It is a great advice but quite frankly – EXTREMELY time consuming. I don’t know about you but for me finding a time to create content and maintain other aspects of my online business is a lot more important. Especially since there is No Known or at least confirmed penalty for having dead links as Darren rightfully states in his lesson and as mentioned by many other blogs around the web . Problem often comes from using plugins on our blogs, as they create links not designed to be followed and as such give errors, that is in addition to actual links that are dead. On my last scan I had hundreds of “dead links” and it would require me way too much time to address them. Perhaps if you are just starting a new blog and integrate the process into your monthly routine as Darren suggests – it will work but for me… Bad Investment of my time, considering that I don’t see it helping or punishing me. So the questions is now – what do I think about eBook overall? 31 Days To Build A Better Blog As I have stated right before I jumped into the argument on one of the points Darren makes in his eBook – “ …I was, seating… reading… agreeing… ” That is because I think that eBook is a superb reference and action steps guide. While it is available for reading on Darren’s blog – I like to have an easy access to information, print is and read at my convenience. Yeah, I like to read printed information, as it also allows me to highlight the points I need to further look into and make the guide truly useful to me! Oh, yeah – the eBook also includes notes from Darren, references for additional reading and Action Steps for each Lesson , which I’m sure many will appreciate. Quite nice features in my opinion! While you can read the entire Guide on Darren’s Blog – I recommend you purchase the eBook edition as for $14 it is great investment! Even if you don’t follow every lesson I can assure you that you will get a lot of great information and with printed material – you can actually separate it into action steps as YOU are willing to take them! Disclaimer: some of the links mentioned within this post or posts they lead to are my affiliate links and I get compensated for recommending those products. However I never recommend something I didn’t believe in and welcome your questions and feedback.
